Beryl Hits Texas, Sparks Tornado Outbreak

Beryl’s Impact and Future Path

Summary:
Hurricane Beryl made landfall as a Category 1 storm near Matagorda, Texas, early Monday, bringing wind gusts up to nearly 100 mph and a storm surge over 5 feet. It caused significant flooding in Houston and led to a tornado outbreak across northeastern Texas and western Louisiana. The storm resulted in at least four deaths and left over 2 million customers without power, primarily in the Houston area.
Beryl has now lost its tropical characteristics but continues to move northwards, with its remnants predicted to cause more tornadoes and flooding in the Midwest and Ohio Valley through Wednesday. Heavy rains and possible tornadoes are expected from northern Indiana through eastern Michigan to Ontario and Quebec.
This hurricane season is projected to be more active than usual, with Colorado State University revising its forecast to predict 25 named storms, 12 hurricanes, and six major hurricanes.
Despite being a Category 1 hurricane, Beryl had severe impacts, especially in Texas, causing widespread power outages, significant rainfall, and numerous tornado warnings. The storm set a record for the most tornado warnings issued in a single day in July, with at least 41 tornadoes confirmed.
Key impacts:

  • Power Outages: 2.3 million customers lost power in southeastern Texas, with additional outages in Louisiana and Arkansas.
  • Wind Gusts: Peak gusts reached 97 mph near Freeport, Texas.
  • Rainfall: Some areas received over a foot of rain, leading to flash flooding.
  • Tornadoes: 115 tornado warnings issued, with at least 41 confirmed tornadoes.
