Flood Prevention Efforts in Mnambithi (Ladysmith)

The Alfred Duma Municipality in Mnambithi (Ladysmith) has historically faced severe flooding issues but is now taking steps to mitigate future risks. By February 2023, the municipality had secured eight out of eleven necessary valves to prevent flooding from the Klip River, with plans to acquire the remaining valves by the end of March 2023. The municipality confirmed that all eleven non-return valves have been replaced and are now monitored continuously to prevent damage or theft.
Additionally, a task team has been formed to address flooding in low-lying areas of the CBD. Long-term strategies include intensifying de-silting activities in the river channel and increasing the stormwater network’s capacity. The municipality, in collaboration with KZNCOGTA, is also conducting specific studies to secure necessary funding for further flood mitigation efforts.
Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts on these measures in the comment section.
