Central South Dakota Experiences Surprise Earthquake

Central South Dakota experienced a rare event on Thursday afternoon as a 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck the region, causing surprise and concern among residents. The earthquake, with its epicenter located approximately 24 miles northwest of Pierre near the Missouri River, was recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) at around 2:40 PM central standard time. While earthquakes are measured on a scale from 3.0 to 8.0, with higher numbers indicating more severe tremors, this quake, although noticeable, did not result in any reported injuries or damages according to Hughes County Sheriff Patrick Callahan. The local community reported experiencing the shock, with some noting objects falling off shelves and the ground shaking beneath them.
The Army Corps of Engineers, responsible for monitoring and maintaining the Oahe Dam west of Pierre, has assured that protocols are in place for such events. A team of engineers is set to inspect the dam and any affected equipment to address potential issues arising from the quake. Despite the relative infrequency of earthquakes in South Dakota, the state has encountered such natural events before, with a minor 2.5 quake near the South Dakota-Nebraska border earlier this year and a 2011 earthquake near Fort Pierre. The largest recorded earthquake in South Dakota occurred in 1964 south of Martin. This recent tremor serves as a reminder of the state’s susceptibility to seismic activity, though it remains a rare occurrence.
