Sahuarita Unified School District Enhances Safety Measures Amid Rise in School Shootings
SAHUARITA, Ariz. (KGUN) — In response to a significant increase in school shootings across the nation, the Sahuarita Unified School District (SUSD) is implementing robust safety measures to protect students and staff.
According to data from Everytown, USA, there were 115 incidents of gunfire on school grounds in 2024, resulting in 31 deaths and 65 injuries. In light of these alarming statistics, SUSD is taking comprehensive steps to enhance security.
Active Shooter Drills and Training
On July 11th, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department conducted an active shooter safety drill at Walden Grove High School. Students and teachers participated in a simulated shooting scenario to practice response procedures. Sheriff Chris Nanos emphasized the importance of teaching students, law enforcement, and school staff how to react in such situations.
Enhanced Security Infrastructure
SUSD is investing in physical security enhancements, including the installation of bullet-resistant and riot-proof laminate in classrooms. Superintendent Dr. Manuel Valenzuela highlighted the community’s support for these measures, stating they are essential for creating safe and supportive educational environments. The district is also upgrading its surveillance capabilities with cloud-based security cameras for real-time monitoring.
Focus on Mental Health
Acknowledging that safety extends beyond physical measures, SUSD is also prioritizing mental health and counseling services. The district will increase the availability of these services to support students’ well-being and address the psychological impacts of living in an era where school shootings are a real concern. School counselor Nicole DeSouza expressed the emotional toll on educators and parents, noting the unfortunate necessity of such conversations in today’s world.
