Florida Braces for Active Hurricane Season with Tax-Free Shopping Days
Retailers in Florida are gearing up for an anticipated active hurricane season by encouraging residents to take advantage of a 14-day sales tax holiday. Running from June 1 to June 14, this period coincides with the beginning of the six-month hurricane season, allowing consumers to purchase essential items like batteries and portable generators without paying sales tax. This initiative, first introduced in 2006 and annually approved since 2017, aims to prepare Floridians for potential storms by offering tax exemptions on a wide range of products, including recent additions like pet supplies and medicines.
With forecasts from AccuWeather and Colorado State University predicting a tumultuous hurricane season due to La Niña conditions and warm waters, the tax holiday, part of a broader tax package signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, seeks to mitigate some of the financial burdens of disaster preparedness. The state anticipates that shoppers will save $80.2 million during the two tax holiday periods, despite a significant reduction in state and local government revenue.
Scott Shalley, President of the Florida Retail Federation, emphasizes the dual benefits of the tax holiday: saving money for consumers and stimulating activity for retailers. He also hints at additional sales by retailers, especially those in the hardware industry, as the hurricane season commences, underscoring the importance of readiness in the face of severe weather threats.
