23 Dead, Thousands Powerless After Central US Storms

Deadly Storms and Tornadoes Claim 23 Lives Across Central and Southern US During Memorial Day Weekend

Over the Memorial Day weekend, a series of deadly storms and tornadoes wreaked havoc across central and southern US, resulting in at least 23 fatalities across four states, with ongoing severe weather warnings for some areas extending into Tuesday. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear reported that the storms led to massive damage and at least five deaths in the state, including a 54-year-old man who died of a heart attack while clearing fallen trees. The severe weather also caused destruction in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, leaving over 400,000 residents without power in seven states and counting at least 11 tornadoes. The National Weather Service issued continued warnings for large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes, with severe thunderstorms expected to form over Texas on Tuesday. Record-high temperatures were experienced in Texas, with an excessive heat warning in place, and Florida saw record temperatures as well. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is conducting damage assessments, and President Joe Biden has offered condolences and federal support. In Arkansas, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders noted eight deaths due to the storms, with victims including those affected by power outages and falling trees. Oklahoma reported at least two deaths in Mayes County after a tornado struck. The storms have left a path of destruction, including damaged homes, businesses, and power outages, with ongoing severe weather threats into the week.
