Heavy Rainfall in Bauchi Claims Four Lives and Causes Extensive Damage
Four traders have tragically died following a severe storm that hit Bauchi state, specifically at the IBB Square, where the northeast trade fair had recently concluded. The heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong winds, commenced on the night preceding June 2, leading to the immediate deaths of two individuals and significant destruction. Emergency response teams, including the police and other security forces, were swiftly deployed for search and rescue operations.
The deceased were identified by SP Ahmed Wakil, the spokesman for the Bauchi police force, as Abdullahi Abubakar, 38; Sadik Ahmed Alfa, 32; Malam Musa; and Abdulaziz Abdulrahman. Another victim, Fatima Isa, 31, is currently recovering in the hospital. Efforts are ongoing to assess the damage and address the aftermath of the storm, with the dead having been moved to the mortuary.
This tragic event occurred in the wake of the 15th Edition of the Joint Domestic Trade Fair in Bauchi, inaugurated by Nigeria’s Vice-President, Kashim Shettima, on May 18, 2024. In unrelated news, Bauchi state’s commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Ahmed Aliyu Jalam, also passed away in a car accident, along with his driver, while traveling to his hometown. The state governor, Bala Mohammed, confirmed the death, highlighting a period of mourning and tragedy in the state.
