$5M Modesto Infrastructure Probe by CA AG

Investigation Launched into South Modesto Infrastructure Funding

In Modesto, California, a controversy has emerged involving state Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil and Stanislaus County Supervisor Channce Condit over the allocation and authorization of $5 million in state funding. Secured a year ago, this funding was earmarked for sidewalks, streetlights, and other neighborhood improvements in Modesto’s south side, specifically targeting the Parklawn area.
Alvarado-Gil has prompted an investigation by the California Attorney General’s Office to scrutinize the process by which this funding was authorized, casting uncertainty on the future of the infrastructure projects planned for the area. Although specifics of the allegations or potential legal missteps by Condit have not been disclosed by Alvarado-Gil, the move has been perceived as questioning Condit’s handling of the funds.
Condit, defending the transparency and legality of the process, expressed concerns that Alvarado-Gil’s actions might not only jeopardize the funding for south Modesto but could also impact the county’s future state funding opportunities. He insists that all procedures were properly followed, a sentiment echoed by Stanislaus County’s Chief Executive Officer, who confirmed that the $5 million was accepted and allocated for the Parklawn project, with none of it yet spent.
Community leaders and residents, anxious about the potential derailment of vital infrastructure improvements, rallied for transparency and the continuation of the project, stressing the importance of the investment for neighborhood safety and connectivity.
The investigation’s announcement has introduced a “dark cloud” over the project, according to Condit, who feels personally targeted by Alvarado-Gil’s actions and is considering legal action for defamation. With construction originally slated to finish by 2026, the inquiry has put the timeline and future of these much-needed improvements in limbo, leaving the Parklawn community in a state of uncertainty and frustration.
