Ex-Royal Marine’s Death Not Suspicious After Espionage Charges

Matthew Trickett, a 37-year-old former Royal Marine who had been charged with espionage offences for allegedly spying for Hong Kong, was found dead in a park near his home on May 19, just days after his court appearance. His death is not being treated as suspicious by Thames Valley Police, following a Home Office post-mortem and further enquiries. Trickett’s passing comes as his co-accused, a Border Force worker and a retired police officer, were also due to face court. Despite concerns for his welfare and suicidal tendencies, Trickett was released on bail after the prosecution requested he be remanded in custody. The cause of death is currently unexplained, and the case against him has been discontinued posthumously.
