UQAM Protesters Decry Stealth Encampment Dismantling

UQAM Pro-Palestinian Encampment Faces “Disguised” Dismantling After Court Injunction

Demonstrators at the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM) are resisting modifications mandated by a court injunction to their pro-Palestinian encampment, viewing these changes as a veiled attempt to dismantle it. The camp, which has been set up since May 12 near the Pierre-Dansereau Science Complex, faced legal action from UQAM, seeking to ensure free movement and security at the site. The Superior Court partially granted the injunction, demanding that demonstrators clear space around buildings and remove obstacles to windows and surveillance equipment. Organizers argue these measures undermine their freedom of expression and right to demonstrate, despite their commitment to comply. The injunction is in effect until June 6, also requiring encampment inspections by UQAM and the Montreal Fire Department. The Union of Professors of UQAM and its affiliated teachers’ union have expressed disagreement with the university’s legal approach.
