Aviva Analysis Shows Summer Flood Claims Rise to 35 Percent
Aviva’s analysis reveals a surprising trend: 35% of home insurance flood claims occur during the summer months, challenging the traditional belief that floods mainly happen in autumn and winter. The insurer’s data from 2013 to 2024 shows that July and August each account for 12% of annual flood claims, with a noticeable increase in summer flooding incidents in recent years. This shift is attributed to intense rainfall on dry land, leading to flash floods, especially in urban areas where impermeable surfaces prevent water absorption.
Jason Storah, CEO of Aviva UK & Ireland General Insurance, warns of the growing risk of summer flash floods across the nation. He urges residents and businesses to prepare for floods year-round by implementing flood action plans. Storah advises taking proactive measures to protect properties, such as moving valuables to higher ground and installing flood gates.
A recent survey commissioned by Aviva found that 27% of UK homeowners are contributing to the flood risk by replacing garden areas with impermeable driveways. The insurer emphasizes the importance of choosing absorbent materials and keeping drainage systems clear to mitigate flood risks. Aviva offers practical tips for homeowners and businesses to enhance their flood defenses, including the use of more permeable landscaping materials and the installation of rainwater collection systems to ease pressure on drains.
