Bridge Collapses in Bihar Raise Alarms
In Bihar, a recent spate of bridge collapses has prompted the State government to seek detailed reports from relevant departments. Over the past 13 days, six bridges have collapsed, with 13 incidents reported since April 2022. Experts and the Bihar Engineering Services Association (BESA) are urging a “third-party investigation” and warning of more potential collapses during the upcoming monsoon season. They suggest poor construction practices and the use of substandard materials as primary causes, citing a nexus between junior engineers and contractors.
The latest incident occurred on June 30, when a bridge pillar on the Bundi river in Kishanganj district sank due to strong currents. This bridge was completed in 2007-2008. The government has instructed the departments of Road Construction and Rural Development to issue notices to responsible agencies and contractors, promising stern action based on the investigation’s findings.
Meanwhile, political reactions are mixed. Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi dismissed the collapses as a conspiracy to defame the government, whereas Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav criticized the government, calling for resignations of those accountable. The recurring collapses highlight urgent systemic issues in construction quality and oversight in Bihar.
