Strong Earthquake Hits Near Italy’s Campi Flegrei Supervolcano

A 4.4 magnitude earthquake has shaken Italy’s Campi Flegrei supervolcano area, causing structural damage in Pozzuoli and affecting Naples, 20 kilometers away. This event is the most significant in 40 years, amidst a “seismic storm” with over a dozen 2.0+ magnitude quakes recently. A 3.5 magnitude quake occurred just an hour before the main shock. April alone saw 1,252 tremors in the region, predominantly minor. Increased seismic activity since 2022 raises concerns of potential volcanic activity due to magma or gas buildup. The area, near Mt. Vesuvius and known for ground fluctuation phenomena, supports over 500,000 residents. Italian authorities are updating evacuation plans in response.
