Kolkata witnessed a tragic aftermath as Cyclone Remal slammed into the Sundarbans delta, causing significant destruction and claiming at least six lives. The cyclone, which made landfall between Sagar Island and Khepupara in Bangladesh on Sunday night, unleashed heavy rains across West Bengal, leading to property and crop damage.
Most fatalities resulted from electrocution. Among the victims were Phorey Singh and his son Tarun from Memari in Burdwan East, who died while trying to clear an uprooted banana tree. In North 24 Parganas’ Panihati, Gopal Burman lost his life to a snapped electric wire, while Tapasi Das was electrocuted in a waterlogged road in Maheshtala, South 24 Parganas. Renuka Mondal succumbed to injuries when a tree fell on her house on Mousuni Island, and Mohammad Sajid was killed in Kolkata by a dislodged concrete chunk.
The cyclone’s impact led to widespread road blockages and waterlogging, disrupting Lok Sabha election campaign rallies. The inclement weather is expected to persist, affecting planned political events, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s roadshow in Kolkata.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed condolences and assured immediate financial assistance to the victims’ families.
