Cyclone Remal’s Aftermath: Death Toll Rises to 55 in India and Bangladesh
The devastating impact of Cyclone Remal, which hit India and Bangladesh over the weekend, has led to a death toll of 55, officials have confirmed. In India, the storm’s fury was felt across several states, with Mizoram bearing a significant brunt where landslides claimed 27 lives, as reported by the state’s information department. The northeastern states of Assam and Nagaland also witnessed casualties due to the torrential rains brought by the cyclone.
West Bengal, in eastern India, saw six fatalities as the cyclone wreaked havoc, uprooting trees and damaging homes. The severe weather event made landfall on Bangladesh’s coast Sunday night, impacting nearly four million people and leading to widespread destruction of homes and cropland in both countries. Ongoing heavy rainfall and storms have continued to batter the region post-cyclone.
The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings for more heavy rainfall in the northeast in the coming days, indicating that the crisis is not yet over. Meanwhile, Bangladesh has reported 15 deaths as a direct consequence of Cyclone Remal. The combined efforts of India and Bangladesh are now focused on recovery and providing assistance to the millions affected by this natural disaster.
