Cyclone Remal Threatens Bangladesh and West Bengal Coasts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into Cyclone ‘Remal.’ As of May 23, the system was moving northeastwards and is forecasted to develop into a depression by Friday morning. By May 25, it is likely to strengthen into a cyclonic storm and is expected to hit the Bangladesh and West Bengal coasts as a severe cyclonic storm by the evening of May 26.
The IMD predicts widespread rainfall across Nagaland and other Northeastern states from May 26 to May 29, with heavy rainfall anticipated in isolated areas on May 25. This weather event is also expected to bring thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, to the region. Similar conditions are forecasted for Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.
Furthermore, on May 27, heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted for isolated places over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, and the states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. There are also warnings of thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds for Nagaland on May 24. Residents and authorities in the affected regions are on alert for the incoming severe weather conditions.
