Cyclone Ialy Strikes Kenyan Coast: No Casualties Reported Amid Destruction

Cyclone Ialy Strikes Kenyan Coast, Causes Destruction but No Fatalities Reported

Cyclone Ialy has wreaked havoc along the Kenyan coast, resulting in significant property damage, including several houses and electric posts. The Kenya Red Cross reported that the cyclone brought strong winds to the Majajani area of Kilifi County, among other locations, on Tuesday, May 21. Despite the destruction, no casualties have been reported thus far.

The affected areas include Casuarina, Olimpia, Madunguni in Malindi, and Garashi in Magarini, all within Kilifi County. The Kenya Red Cross detailed incidents of electric posts falling and catching fire, particularly in Jilore Trading Center, due to the cyclone’s extremely strong winds.

In response to the cyclone’s impact, the Kenya Red Cross has called for increased caution among residents of the coastal region. The organization emphasized that, fortunately, there have been no fatalities reported, but the situation remains precarious.

The Kenya Meteorological Department had previously warned of strong south-easterly winds affecting the coast due to Tropical Storm Ialy. The weather advisory specifically cautioned small boats and crafts to steer clear of deep-sea areas, predicting south-easterly winds at 10-30 knots and wave heights ranging from 1.5 to 3.6 meters, indicating moderate to strong sea conditions.

As the community begins to assess and recover from the damage, the focus remains on safety and preparedness for any further impacts from the cyclone.
