Israel Expands Military Operations in Gaza, Discusses Strategy with US
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has announced plans to expand ground operations in Rafah, Gaza, aiming to dismantle Hamas and secure the release of hostages. In discussions with White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan, Gallant emphasized efforts to strengthen Israel’s Middle East position. Sullivan, having met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, underscored the need for targeted military operations to minimize civilian casualties. The U.S. is exploring a plan involving Saudi Arabia to facilitate Palestinian governance in Gaza and progress towards statehood. Amidst ongoing fierce fighting in Gaza, with significant casualties reported on both sides, humanitarian aid access is severely hindered, raising concerns of an “apocalyptic” crisis. Netanyahu’s stance against an independent Palestine and insistence on defeating Hamas contrasts with internal disagreements over Gaza’s postwar governance. The conflict, triggered by a Hamas attack in October, has resulted in over 35,400 Palestinian deaths, as per Gaza Health Ministry, and significant Israeli casualties.
