Ex-Wright-Patterson Chief Becomes Air Force Academy Deputy

Sherman Steps Up as Interim Superintendent Awaiting Senate Confirmation of New Academy Leader

Sherman is appointed the interim superintendent following Lt. Gen. Richard Clark’s retirement, pending the Senate confirmation of the nominated 22nd superintendent, Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, a 1991 academy graduate. Sherman, expressing honor and humility at his assignment, aims to support the mission of developing future leaders for the Air Force and Space Force. Having commanded the 88th Air Base Wing at Wright-Patterson AFB from June 2018 to June 2020, and served as principal military assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense, Sherman brings significant experience to his role. His tenure at Wright-Patterson was marked by managing the base through the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and responding to an active shooter scare in August 2018. The 88th Air Base Wing, under his command, ensured the continuity of the U.S. Air Force mission despite challenging circumstances. Wright-Patterson AFB stands as Ohio’s largest single-site employer, highlighting Sherman’s leadership in a critical capacity.
