Florida Faces Dual Threat of Hurricanes and Mosquitoes During Peak Season
Summary:
During National Mosquito Control Awareness Week, Floridians are being reminded of the dual threats posed by a predicted "super-charged" hurricane season and an increase in mosquito-borne diseases. With hurricanes leading to conditions ripe for mosquito breeding, experts highlight the need for vigilance against diseases like Dengue fever, Zika, malaria, and West Nile virus. Already, three counties have issued mosquito-borne illness advisories. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts an intense hurricane season due to factors like the transition from a strong El Nino to La Nina and an above-average West African monsoon. NOAA predicts up to 25 named storms and 13 hurricanes. The Florida Mosquito Control Association emphasizes the three D’s of protection: Drain, Dress, and Defend, to mitigate mosquito threats.
