Gas Leak Causes Chaos at Kuala Lumpur International Airport>
Kuala Lumpur International Airport Incident Summary
On July 4, a gas leak at the engineering section of Kuala Lumpur International Airport caused chaos, leading to 39 people experiencing dizziness and nausea. Local rescue officer Muhammad Nur Khairi Samsumin confirmed that 24 victims were later discharged, 14 received medical care at the Air Disaster Unit, and one person was hospitalized.
The leak, traced to a skid tank left unattended for nine years, involved methyl mercaptan—a gas added to liquefied petroleum gas for its distinctive rotten cabbage smell. Emergency crews are working to contain the leak and will dismantle and dispose of the tank.
The incident did not affect airport operations, and there was no risk to public safety. The facility where the leak occurred is separate from the airport’s passenger terminal and affected the work of three companies operating there.
