GHRA Demands External Investigation into GGMC and Gold Mining in Guyana
GHRA Calls for Independent and International Probe of GGMC and Gold Mining Operations in Guyana
The Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA) has called for a comprehensive independent investigation into the operations of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) following recent gold smuggling scandals and ongoing issues in the gold mining sector. The GHRA criticized both the Government and GGMC for delaying a thorough probe and emphasized that the severity of mismanagement and criminal allegations necessitates an external investigation rather than an internal one. The GHRA urged the Government to appoint a team of forensic investigators, including international experts, to examine and recommend solutions for the gold industry. The organization highlighted the GGMC’s long-standing neglect of irregularities and criminal activities in the sector, noting that international agencies, including the US, have repeatedly called for action without success.
