Hidden Cameras Reveal Disturbing Horse Abuse at Shannonside Foods Facility
A recent investigation by RTÉ has unveiled alarming mistreatment of horses at a lairage used by Shannonside Foods in Straffan, Co, Kildare. Hidden cameras captured footage of horses being subjected to repeated physical abuse, including hitting, whipping, and prodding with pitchforks. One horse, too weak to stand, died after hours of suffering.
In response, Shannonside Foods stated any allegations of mistreatment would be prosecuted. Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue condemned the abuse as “abhorrent and distressing,” vowing a thorough investigation and strict legal action. Horse Racing Ireland has pledged to support ongoing investigations and encouraged public reporting of any mistreatment.
Minister McConalogue emphasized that the treatment observed is not representative of the overall industry, which typically shows great care towards horses. He reiterated the existence of strict laws governing the welfare and treatment of horses, although incidents of abuse can still occur.
The investigation highlighted that many of the abused horses were former racehorses, some of which had earned significant sums for their owners. The Department of Agriculture, noting that the lairage is outside its regulation, assured that evidence of illegal activity would be investigated.
The second part of the RTÉ Investigates series airs tonight, continuing to shed light on the dark side of the equine industry.
