Herbicide Spill HAZMAT Response in Canandaigua

Driver Unhurt as Herbicide Truck Overturns in Canandaigua

A driver miraculously avoided injury when his herbicide spray truck overturned on Andrews Road in Canandaigua, leading to a hazardous materials incident. The incident occurred on Wednesday when the truck, carrying a 400-gallon tank of herbicide, began leaking the substance. Firefighters were quick to respond, declaring it a Level Zero HAZMAT situation and calling for assistance from the New York State DEC Spill Response and the Ontario County Hazardous Materials Team.
The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, managed to get out of the vehicle on his own and confirmed he was not harmed. Efforts by the Canandaigua Firefighters to contain the spill included the use of absorbent pads, pillows, and booms to control the leakage and prevent environmental damage. The T&R Environmental Emergency Response Team was summoned to aid in the cleanup and transfer the remaining herbicide to a safe container, allowing for the vehicle’s recovery.
Following nearly five hours of coordinated response, all hazards were successfully neutralized, leaving no risk to public safety or the environment. The Canandaigua Fire Department publicly acknowledged the collaborative effort of multiple agencies in managing the incident through a post on its Facebook page. The department also expressed gratitude to the Veterans Affairs Fire Department for providing coverage during the extensive operation.
