Journalist Detained for Publishing Confidential Investigation in Tanzania

In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, journalist and owner of the Dima Online website, Ms. Dinna Maningo, remains in police custody for allegedly publishing confidential documents related to a sexual assault investigation involving former Simiyu Regional Commissioner, Dr. Yahya Nawanda. Maningo was first detained on June 13, 2024. Her website was the first to report on the allegations, which led to Nawanda’s immediate removal from office by President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The journalist’s lawyer suggests that she is accused of exposing confidential investigation reports. Following her arrest, the Mwanza Regional Journalists Club arranged legal representation for her. Additionally, on June 17, another individual, Constantine Mathias, was arrested for questioning by police.
