June 5 DC Storm: Key Highlights

June 5 Tornado Outbreak Among Largest in DMV History

In a significant severe weather event on June 5, the DMV area experienced 13 tornadoes, making it one of the largest such events in recent memory, according to NOAA. This outbreak stands out in comparison to other notable severe weather incidents in the region. For instance, on June 1, 2012, the DMV saw 28 tornadoes, with 12 confirmed by NOAA. Another significant event occurred on April 27-28, 2011, with 19 tornadoes, including an EF-2 tornado in Virginia. Additionally, Hurricane Ivan in 2004 holds the record for the most tornadoes produced by a single storm with 127 confirmed tornadoes in the U.S. More recently, Hurricane Isaias in 2020 led to 46 tornadoes from South Carolina to Connecticut, including three in southern Maryland. While the June 5 event is considerable, it is part of a historical pattern of severe weather in the region.
