Kilauea Quakes Rise, Inflation Detected

Kīlauea Activity Update from USGS HVO

Summary:
The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported increased earthquake activity and elevated ground deformation rates at Kīlauea’s summit and upper rift zones over the past day, following a brief lull. Scientists caution that further increases in seismicity or deformation could lead to new eruptions near the summit.
Recent observations show that Kīlauea erupted briefly on June 3 southwest of the caldera. Currently, seismic activity at the eruption site is low, and sulfur dioxide emissions have decreased to near-background levels. Ground deformation, as captured by satellite imagery, indicates significant inflation southwest of the caldera.
In the lower rift zones, seismicity and ground deformation rates remain low, and sulfur dioxide emissions from Puʻuʻōʻō are negligible. The analysis suggests that magma is repressurizing the storage system beneath Halemaʻumaʻu, but it is uncertain if this will lead to another eruption or remain as seismic unrest. There are no signs of an imminent eruption at this time.
