Kuwait Intensifies Fight Against Corruption with Comprehensive Investigation of Government Contracts
Kuwait is intensifying its fight against corruption, a move that comes amid growing concerns about the depth of corruption within the country. Despite improving its position in the Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index for 2023 by 14 spots to rank 63rd, Kuwait faces criticism from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace for deep-seated corruption. To address these issues, the government plans to review all tender files and contracts related to government projects awarded in recent years to ensure they meet technical, financial, and legal criteria. Special attention will be given to contracts related to COVID-19 pandemic efforts, with 5 billion dinars in expenditures under scrutiny. The investigation will also cover infrastructure projects, seeking to eliminate corruption and promote transparency. Recent legislative changes, including an amendment to the Public Tenders Law aimed at reducing exploitation and fostering fair competition, are part of Kuwait’s broader efforts to rebuild public trust and demonstrate a commitment to good governance and anti-corruption measures.
