Louisiana Families Suffering Due to Rising Insurance Premiums, Cassidy Advocates for Change

Cassidy Calls for Action to Aid Louisiana Families Amid Insurance Crisis
In a passionate plea, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy has urged Congress to address the skyrocketing premiums of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) due to the new Risk Rating 2.0 system implemented by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Speaking on the Senate floor, Cassidy shared distressing stories from Louisiana constituents, including a retired couple from Bayou Lafourche who were forced to cancel their flood insurance as their annual premium surged from $500 to $2,500. Cassidy is advocating for legislation to increase transparency in the Risk Rating 2.0 and to make flood insurance more affordable.
Additionally, Cassidy criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) program, citing its failure to implement the program effectively, which has left many students uncertain about their college finances. He revealed that the Department of Education has obstructed a Government Accountability Office investigation into the matter, a move he deems as hiding evidence of mistakes from Congress.
On a positive note, Cassidy highlighted recent funding allocated to the Coushatta Tribe of more than $1.3 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act for road safety improvements in Southwest Louisiana. This is part of an ongoing effort to enhance infrastructure and safety in the region, with the Coushatta Tribe having received over $11.4 million for the extension and upgrade of approximately 2.5 miles of CC Bel Road.
Senator Cassidy’s efforts reflect a commitment to addressing both immediate and structural challenges facing Louisiana families, from insurance affordability and educational access to infrastructure safety and development.
