Montgomery County Unveils State-of-the-Art Active Shooter Training Center
Montgomery County and state officials have recently introduced a cutting-edge active shooter training facility in New Caney, aiming to provide unparalleled reality-based training experiences for first responders throughout Texas. Montgomery County Sheriff Rand Henderson highlighted the facility’s significance during its unveiling. The project’s inception dates back to October 1, 2022, following a collaborative effort between the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Montgomery County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management to enhance community safety and prevent school shootings. Since its inception, approximately 1,200 first responders have benefited from the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training conducted at the facility.
The training center, situated in the renovated premises of the former Keefer Crossing Middle School, has received substantial backing, with $23.7 million in state funding. This renovation and operational support are part of a broader state mandate requiring all first responders to undergo active shooter training. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will oversee the facility’s operations, supported by state funds allocated for staffing, including one lieutenant, four sergeants, and four specialists.
Sheriff Henderson praised the facility’s role in enhancing public safety by ensuring first responders are well-prepared to face active threat situations. The initiative is seen as a significant advancement in public safety training, offering free training to responders nationwide and bolstering community security. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick commended the effort as a collaborative achievement that sets a new standard for the state.
