Police Fatally Shoot Man Sought in Harlem Case>
In a dramatic incident early Thursday morning, a man sought for questioning in connection with an East Harlem shooting was fatally shot by police officers in Woodbridge, New Jersey, after he opened fire on them, officials reported. The confrontation occurred shortly after midnight when New York City detectives tracked the man to a hotel banquet hall. The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, exchanged gunfire with officers as he exited an elevator, injuring a New York detective and a Woodbridge police officer. Both officers are expected to recover.
The deceased was a person of interest in a June 7 shooting in Manhattan that left a 29-year-old man critically injured. The suspect was located after a vehicle linked to the shooting was spotted by an automated license plate reader in Edison, New Jersey. Local police, in collaboration with New York detectives, tracked the vehicle to the hotel where the fatal encounter occurred.
This marks the third shooting involving New York City police officers this month. Paul DiGiacomo, president of the Detectives Endowment Association, commended the injured detective for his bravery and expressed relief that no lives were lost among law enforcement.
