NIA Charges Six in Assam Army Camp Terror Attack Case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has recently filed a chargesheet against six individuals, including four who are currently absconding, in connection with a 2023 terror attack aimed at an Army camp in Assam. This attack, orchestrated by the Myanmar-based United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), involved two assailants on motorcycles throwing grenades at the camp located in Kakopathar, Tinsukia district, on November 22, 2023. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from this incident.
The chargesheet, submitted to the NIA Special Court in Guwahati, names ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah, Brigadier Arunudoy Dohutia, 2nd Lt Saurav Asom, Captain Abhijit Gogoi, Parag Borah, and Bijoy Moran as the primary conspirators and perpetrators of the attack. Of these, Borah and Moran were apprehended in early December 2023 in Tinsukhia district, while the others remain at large.
This legal action has unveiled a comprehensive terrorist plot against India, highlighting the recruitment, training, and execution strategies of the ULFA (I). The NIA’s investigation into this case, initially handled by Assam Police, has exposed the elaborate schemes devised by Baruah and Dohutia to attack army camps across Assam, with Abhijit Gogoi coordinating the attack in question.
The agency has also uncovered ULFA (I)’s use of social media for recruiting young individuals, training them for terrorist endeavors, and executing attacks to further its extremist and separatist objectives. The investigation is ongoing, with efforts to identify additional conspirators and dismantle the complete terror network associated with this attack.
