School Safety Conference Evolution: From Tourniquet Training to Comprehensive Preparedness

Orange County Public Schools in Florida has transformed its approach to emergency management and safety training for school leaders through its annual two-day conference, Preparedness Days. Originally beginning with tourniquet and Stop the Bleed training provided by Orlando Health, the initiative has evolved into a comprehensive safety conference covering topics from human trafficking to internet safety and mental health. The conference also includes training on how to handle active assailants and bomb threats among other emergencies. The event not only offers training but also features vendors and sponsors, allowing for a collaborative effort among various stakeholders including public safety, health departments, and local emergency management agencies. Additionally, a significant component of the conference is a full-scale reunification exercise, focusing on the process of reuniting students with their families after an incident. The initiative has garnered interest from other districts looking to implement similar programs, highlighting the importance of starting small and gradually expanding the scope of training offered. The 2024 Campus Safety Director of the Year winners will be announced at the Campus Safety Conference in Atlanta, celebrating individuals who have made significant contributions to school safety.
