In Matteson, Illinois, the village is continuing cleanup efforts after a freight train derailment on Thursday, which involved 25 railcars. Village Mayor Sheila Chalmers-Currin announced plans for a controlled burn of liquefied petroleum gas remaining from the crash. No hazardous materials are involved, and the controlled burn is expected to take a couple of days. The village will honor the first responders who helped avert a disaster at the annual Independence Day concert by bringing them on stage to show appreciation for their bravery. Canadian National Railway is leading the investigation into the cause of the derailment, with some surrounding streets remaining closed to aid the investigation.
