Security Breach at Panjab University Raises Concerns

In a recent incident at Panjab University, a white Scorpio caused a security scare by breaching the restricted entry zone of the AC Joshi Library around 1:30 am, raising concerns about student safety, especially for those using the library late at night. The car broke through a rope barrier and stopped in front of the library’s main gate before making a U-turn and leaving the premises. This event, coupled with a video of intoxicated boys making inappropriate comments outside a girls’ hostel, has heightened unease among students, particularly women, about late-night library sessions and their safety when returning to hostels.

The university’s dean of student welfare has called for an explanation from the security chief and the guards on duty at the time of the incident. Chief security officer Vikram Singh acknowledged the seriousness of the breach, noting it was the first of its kind, and announced plans to construct a wicket gate to prevent such incidents in the future. The car was reportedly owned by an outsider, highlighting the challenges faced by the university in controlling access to the campus, especially after local markets close at 9 pm.

An inquiry into the matter has been initiated, with a meeting scheduled to discuss further actions to enhance campus security and restrict outsider entry during late hours. This incident has sparked a broader conversation about the need for improved security measures at educational institutions to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
