Putin Appoints Sergei Shoigu as Secretary of Russia’s National Security Council, Replacing Him as Defense Minister

Putin Reshuffles Defense Leadership Amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict

On Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a significant reshuffle within the country’s defense leadership. He suggested Sergei Shoigu, the long-serving defense minister, take on a new role as the secretary of Russia’s national security council. This move was part of a broader proposal that included nominating Andrei Belousov as the new defense minister. This reshuffle is notable as Putin embarks on his fifth term as president, amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, now in its third year.

Following Putin’s inauguration, which was marked by grandeur at the Kremlin, the entire Russian Cabinet resigned on Tuesday, adhering to the country’s legal procedures.

Andrei Kartapolov, the head of the State Duma Defense Committee, commented on the decision to RIA Novosti, emphasizing the president’s role as the Supreme Commander in Chief and the necessity of such a decision at this time.

The backdrop to these political maneuvers is the intensification of the conflict in Ukraine, particularly in the northeast. A renewed ground offensive by Russia has led to significant civilian displacement due to heavy artillery and mortar shelling targeting towns and villages. This escalation has seen thousands fleeing the violence, with the Kharkiv region being a focal point of the conflict.

In a recent development, at least 4,000 civilians have evacuated the Kharkiv region since the onset of Moscow’s latest military operation. The governor of Kharkiv, Oleh Syniehubov, reported that Russian forces had launched attacks on 27 settlements within a 24-hour period, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Analysts suggest that Russia’s strategy aims to capitalize on current ammunition shortages before Western reinforcements can bolster Ukrainian defenses. This approach involves overwhelming Ukrainian troops with heavy artillery and infantry assaults, a tactic that threatens to stretch Ukrainian forces thin, especially as intense battles continue in the south.

In a tragic incident in the Russian city of Belgorod, close to the Ukraine border, a 10-story apartment building partially collapsed, resulting in at least eight deaths and 20 injuries. Russian authorities attributed the collapse to Ukrainian shelling, a claim that has not been addressed by Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declared stopping the Russian offensive in the northeast a top priority, with counteroffensive operations ongoing in several villages around Kharkiv. The situation remains dynamic, with both sides experiencing shifts in control over various settlements amidst the ongoing conflict.
