Quake Shakes Northern Venezuela, Caribbean

Earthquake Strikes Southeastern Caribbean Sea

A preliminary 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the southeastern Caribbean Sea late Saturday night, affecting areas around 20 miles northeast of Yaguaraparo, Venezuela, and 60 miles from Port of Spain, Trinidad. The USGS reported that around 4.4 million people in Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines felt the quake, which occurred at a depth of about 30 miles. Despite the significant tremor, there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties. The earthquake took place along a fault line separating the Caribbean Plate from the South American Plate, a region known for high seismic activity, including the North Coast and El Pilar Fault Zones.
