New Federal Rule Enhances Safety for Train Derailments>
In response to the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio last year, a new federal rule was finalized to ensure that first responders can quickly access information about hazardous chemicals on a derailed train. This measure aims to enhance their ability to respond appropriately and safely to such emergencies. During the East Palestine incident, it took the local fire chief 45 minutes to learn what chemicals were present, highlighting the need for faster information. The rule was introduced just before a National Transportation Safety Board hearing on the derailment.
