ROOVICE Transforms 70s Tokyo Wooden House for Modern Use

ROOVICE has completed a comprehensive renovation of a 50-year-old wooden residence in Tokyo’s Minato ward, aimed at enhancing earthquake resistance and updating the house for rental use. The Shirokanedai House project blends Japanese tradition with contemporary design, focusing on safety, functionality, and aesthetics.
Key renovations include:

  • First Floor: Removing dividing walls to create an open layout, repainting walls white, replacing tatami floors with hemlock wood, and updating the kitchen and corridor with clinker tiles and a custom-made counter. The bathroom was reconfigured for more space, including updated Tamaishi tile flooring.
  • Second Floor: Removing a kitchenette, installing new tatami mats and shoji doors, updating flooring and windows, and adding a beige carpet for contrast.
The renovation retained traditional elements while modernizing the space, featuring new windows for natural light, stone steps replacing wooden ones to enhance indoor-outdoor connectivity, and waterproofing and repainting the balcony. The project reflects a harmonious blend of safety, tradition, and modernity.
