Cyclone Remal Tragedy: Over 40 Dead in Northeast, PM Modi Announces Aid

Cyclone Remal has wreaked havoc in the northeastern states of India, leading to a death toll of over 40. In response to the disaster, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced financial assistance for the victims, including an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 to those injured. The Prime Minister expressed his condolences and assured all possible support from the Central Government to the affected states, which include Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and West Bengal.
The cyclone has impacted over two lakh individuals across these states, causing massive property and farmland damage, especially in coastal areas of West Bengal such as Kakdwip, Namkhana, and Frazergunj. Nearly 15,000 houses across 24 blocks and 79 municipal wards have been affected. In Manipur, severe flooding has prompted the state government to declare public holidays and recommend citizens to stay indoors unless it’s an emergency. Rescue and evacuation operations are currently underway to assist those hit by the devastating effects of Cyclone Remal.
