U.S. Sailor Sentenced for Espionage in Japan
Former U.S. Navy Sailor Sentenced to 18 Years for Espionage in Japan
A former U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, Bryce Pedicini, has been sentenced to 18 years in military prison following a conviction of espionage and other charges. Serving as a fire controlman on the USS Higgins in Japan, Pedicini was found guilty of attempted espionage, failure to obey a general order, and attempted violation of a general order, as per court-martial findings.
Pedicini’s illegal activities spanned from November 2022 to May 2023, during which he provided classified national defense information to a foreign government official under the guise of drafting research papers, revealed the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). This method of extracting information, as noted by the Navy, is increasingly being employed by adversaries of the U.S.
The NCIS Director, Omar Lopez, emphasized that Pedicini’s actions represent a betrayal of his country and fellow service members, though they should not overshadow the daily sacrifices made by the military to safeguard the nation.
Documents from the case reveal Pedicini smuggled photos of classified information to a foreign official in Yokosuka, Japan, with the potential of harming the United States. Over his career starting in 2009, Pedicini had served on multiple naval ships and was recognized with several awards.
This incident serves as a somber reminder of the threats of espionage within military ranks and the consequences of betraying national security.
