SCARLETT #1 Review: Espionage with a Twist

Scarlett #1: A Fresh Espionage Tale in the G.I. Joe Universe

In the latest addition to Image/Skybound’s Energon Universe, “Scarlett” #1 brings back the iconic G.I. Joe character, Scarlett, in a thrilling new espionage adventure. Written by Kelly Thompson and illustrated by Marco Ferrari, with color art by Lee Loughridge and lettering by Rus Wooton, this issue reestablishes Scarlett as a key figure in the G.I. Joe saga through a compelling narrative that adds depth to the universe’s overarching story.
The plot follows Shana “Scarlett” O’Hara as she embarks on a perilous black ops mission in Japan, aiming to infiltrate Clan Arashikage, a rising power with her ex-partner—now an Arashikage enforcer—Jinx, as her only lead. Scarlett navigates this dangerous terrain with her unique skill set, uncovering a startling weapon that could shift the global power balance.
“Scarlett” #1 has been praised for its engaging script, which successfully blends action and character development, marking a strong return for the character in the espionage genre. Despite minor issues with the penciling, the art direction by Ferrari and Loughridge is celebrated for its unique approach, enriching the storytelling experience.
Scheduled for release on June 5th, this issue promises an exciting opening to Scarlett’s story and is a must-read for fans of G.I. Joe and spy comics alike.
