Severe Flooding Hits Assam, Manipur Rivers: CWC

Assam and Manipur Face Severe Flooding as Rivers Rise Beyond Danger Levels

Severe flooding is being reported in six rivers across Assam and Manipur, including the major Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, placing numerous districts in these states at risk, according to the Central Water Commission (CWC). In Assam, the Brahmaputra river at Neamatighat in Jorhat district has risen to 85.25 metres, slightly above its danger level. Similarly, the Barak river is presenting severe flood conditions across various districts, with levels significantly above danger marks in places like Badarpur Ghat and Annapurna Ghat in Karimganj and Cachar districts respectively.
In Manipur, the Barak River’s water level at Chotabekra in the Imphal East district has surged to 3.95 metres above its danger level, posing a serious threat to surrounding communities. Other rivers in Assam, like the Kopili at Kampur, Kushiyara in Karimganj district, Katakhal at Matijuri, and Dhaleswari at Gharmura, are also flowing well above their danger levels, indicating a severe flood situation that demands immediate attention and action.
The ongoing floods have affected over two lakh people in nine districts of Assam, a situation exacerbated by incessant rainfall following cyclone Remal. Since May 28, the region has also witnessed the loss of six lives due to the floods, rain, and storms. The CWC continues to monitor the situation closely, with all rivers showing varying trends but consistently posing severe risks to the affected regions.
