South Carolina’s History with Hurricanes: A Chronicle of Impact and Recovery

South Carolina’s History with Hurricanes: A Brief Overview
South Carolina, a state located in the southeastern United States, has a long history with hurricanes, experiencing a total of 24 landfalling hurricanes from 1874 to 2023. Among these, four were classified as major hurricanes, reaching Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale. The state faced its first significant test with the Great Charleston Hurricane in 1893, followed by Hurricane Hazel in 1954, Hurricane Gracie in 1959, and the devastating Hurricane Hugo in 1989.
It’s crucial to note that the impact of hurricanes on South Carolina isn’t limited to those making landfall. Hurricanes Florence, Isaias, and Dorian are prime examples of storms that, despite not making direct landfall in the state, brought significant weather-related challenges to the region.
As the hurricane season extends until November 30th, it’s a reminder of the ongoing threat these natural disasters pose and the importance of preparedness for residents of South Carolina and the broader southeastern US.
