State Officials Strategize on Hurricane Readiness

South Carolina Leaders Gather for Hurricane Preparedness Discussion

Leaders across South Carolina convened at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center for a hurricane preparedness discussion. The focus was on adjusted evacuation zones for enhanced risk definition and flexibility during low-impact storms. According to Kim Stenson, Director of SC Emergency Management Division, the goal is to only evacuate those at genuine risk to avoid noncompliance in future emergencies. This has led to smaller, more coastal evacuation zones. Residents in these areas are urged to have evacuation plans ready. Governor McMaster emphasized the importance of preparation for inevitable future hurricanes, highlighting that many residents and visitors are inexperienced with such disasters. Officials, including SC National Guard’s Adjutant General, Major Van McCarty, encouraged the public to use the SCEMD website or app, or pick up a physical Hurricane Guide, to stay informed on evacuation zones and preparation tips. The state aims to be prepared for events as severe as a Category 4 hurricane, reminiscent of Hurricane Hugo, while hoping such measures will not be necessary.
