Cyclone Remal has wreaked havoc across 20 districts, leading to a financial toll of Tk 6,880 crore and claiming the lives of 16 individuals. State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, Mohibbur Rahman, disclosed these alarming figures during a press conference at the Secretariat on June 2. The cyclone, which struck on May 26, caused significant damage, with several coastal regions experiencing inundation due to tidal surges, while numerous roads, embankments, houses, and social institutions bore the brunt of its fury.
The state minister highlighted that in response to the disaster, various relief measures have been initiated, transitioning now into post-disaster efforts. Among the relief distributed to the affected populace in 19 districts are Tk 5.75 crore in cash, 5,500 tonnes of rice, 9,000 packets of dry food, 200 bundles of corrugated sheets, and Tk 2.45 crore each for cattle feed and housing repairs. These efforts are part of the government’s commitment to aiding those impacted by the cyclone’s destruction.
