Sydney Experiences Flash Flooding from Torrential Rain and Dam Spill
Torrential rains and dam overflows triggered flash flooding in Sydney, leading to rescue operations and evacuation orders for several low-lying areas. The severe weather conditions prompted 13 rescues and 297 calls for assistance. The New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES) issued at least 10 emergency evacuation orders for northwest Sydney suburbs. The Warragamba Dam, which supplies 80% of the city’s drinking water, overflowed, raising flood risks in riverside communities. Despite a slowdown in rainfall and dam overflow, authorities warned of ongoing flood risks, advising residents in affected areas to evacuate or prepare for possible isolation. This flooding incident marks the third consecutive month of the Warragamba Dam overflowing. Weather forecasts indicated potential major flooding in northwestern Sydney, a city home to about 5 million people.
