Two Suspected Russian Spies Detained in Latvia

Latvia’s State Security Service Detains Two for Alleged Espionage for Russia

On May 13, the Latvian State Security Service (VDD) arrested two individuals for allegedly collecting intelligence to share with Russia, as reported by the VDD press service and covered by Ukrinform. Legal proceedings against the accused began on May 2, based on Article 85 of the Criminal Code, which deals with espionage. The suspects were involved in the illegal acquisition of sensitive information about other espionage suspects who were already in detention. Among those arrested was Sergei Sidorov, previously charged with espionage activities for Russia.

On May 15, a court decision mandated that both individuals be held in custody while the VDD continues its investigation. This development comes amid reports from the VDD about increased efforts by Russian intelligence to recruit spies through the Telegram messaging app.
