UN Team Shares ISIL Crime Data with Iraq

UNITAD Transfers Critical Data for ISIL Accountability Efforts

UNITAD, the UN Investigative Team focused on holding ISIL accountable for crimes in Iraq, has transferred 28 terabytes of critical evidence to relevant parties, acting head Ana Peyró Llopis informed the Security Council. This effort aligns with UNITAD’s mission to facilitate accountability for ISIL’s war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide between 2014 and 2017. The evidence, including witness testimonials and data from ISIL’s digital devices, has been meticulously gathered to meet international standards for legal proceedings.
Peyró Llopis emphasized the collaborative efforts with Iraqi officials, judiciary, survivors, and civil society organizations to bolster cooperation before UNITAD’s mandate concludes. She highlighted the significance of the evidence for future judicial processes to hold ISIL accountable in Iraq and beyond. Additionally, she briefed on the progress of UNITAD’s drawdown and liquidation by September 17, ensuring the proper management of its resources and archives. The Iraqi authorities will maintain the original evidence for domestic criminal proceedings, with a copy retained by the UN Secretariat.
