Xylem’s Vital Support for Morocco’s Earthquake Survivors Through Water Relief Efforts
In the aftermath of a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck central Morocco on September 8, 2023, causing widespread destruction and affecting over two million people, Xylem, a leading water technology company, has been at the forefront of providing critical water supply to the victims. Collaborating with NGO groups such as Amis des école, Xylem’s social investment group, Watermark, deployed AquaBlock systems – an advanced emergency water system developed by the global NGO Planet Water Foundation. Each AquaBlock can produce 1,500 liters of drinkable water per hour, supporting the daily drinking water requirements of up to 10,000 people.
The earthquake, centered less than 100 kilometers south of Marrakesh in the Marrakesh-Safi region, also known as the Al Haouz earthquake, resulted in more than 3,000 deaths and left tens of thousands without access to shelter or basic facilities. In response, Xylem and its volunteers have worked tirelessly, contributing over 152 hours to ensure the delivery and operation of AquaBlock systems, thus providing drinkable water to those in dire need.
Highlighting the importance of water in disaster scenarios, Hassan Ourkia from Xylem Africa emphasized that clean water is essential not only for hydration but also for cooking, hygiene, sanitation, and medical services. The lack of clean water can severely hinder relief efforts and increase the risk of water-borne diseases.
To date, Xylem and Planet Water have successfully deployed six AquaBlocks to the disaster-struck areas, with the commitment to continue delivering these systems to meet the ongoing needs of the earthquake victims. More than six months after the tragedy, efforts to aid recovery are still in progress, with Xylem and its partners actively seeking new ways to support the affected communities.
Emma Housman of Xylem Inc. highlighted the critical role of collaboration in these efforts, crediting the local expertise of NGO partner Amis des Ecoles and the global response team for their ability to mobilize and import water treatment technology. Xylem’s initiative is part of its broader social mission to ensure reliable, clean water is accessible to all, especially in times of natural disasters or crises affecting water security.
